The Alemannia goes back to the Academic Association of the University of Freiburg, which was founded in 1860 by liberal-minded students with the aim of uniting the Freiburg student body. From this time comes the privilege to wear the colors of the university (blue and white), which were later supplemented by the moss green. Since 1879, the Alemannia has been a fraternity.
We are committed to the liberal-democratic fundamental rights proclaimed by the original Burschenschaft after the Napoleonic Wars of Freedom. Their ideals and goals shaped the Frankfurt Paulskirchen parliament in 1848, and their colors black-red-gold later became the colors of our Federal Republic of Germany.
Until 1972 we were a compulsory beating fraternity, since then we have been optional beating.
Our basic convictions include respect for those who think differently, open-mindedness towards strangers and tolerance towards different political views. Since 1991 we no longer belong to the "Deutsche Burschenschaft". We terminated our membership because the political and ideological tendencies of this association no longer corresponded to our values.
We maintain active contact with other like-minded liberal fraternities throughout Germany.
